Artificial art objects, 2025
Artificial Art Objects combines the two-dimensional aspect of painting with the three-dimensional constructs of assemblage art. Constrained by the decision to use materials already in the studio, such as old boxes, plywood, sawdust, used stretcher bars, canvas, found objects and ephemera collected over the years, the work is distinguished by its unconventional approach and largely workaday components. It demonstrates a puckish impulse to question the rules of traditionally siloed artistic disciplines by synthesizing rudimentary painting techniques and visual word play. The artifice of each object is revealed in its modest elements and the aesthetic choices made to draw together and balance the relationships between form, scale, color and texture. Conceptually, these objects’ meaning is rooted in the intuitive process of their making, and even in their (arguably artificial) presentation in a gallery setting.
On view at Made in Astoria Gallery, September 13–October 8, 2025.
